The Ten Companions of Lumpy

The Bear, the Wolf and the Bat,
     The three which I know
     The three which know me
     Faithful companions
     Form birth, to death
     Everything in-between

The Horse, the Buffalo and the Raven,
     The three which I call
     The three which call me
     Loving companions
     Arriving and departing
     Always according to need

The Crow, the Spider, and the Mouse,
     The three which harmed me
The three which I have harmed
     Helpful companions
     Into woe, or into healing
The course set by my desires

Ten companions do I have
Nine I have given names
The Tenth I dare not
For what name can I contrive:
     To encompass all eternity?
     To describe all mysteries?
     To bind the boundless?
To give form to the formless?
     To limit the limitless?

Call the Tenth what you will
Knowing a name is not enough
To make one a companion
For that, one must travel alongside:
     The Truth Eternal
     The Way Mysterious
     The Life Boundless
     The Hope Formless
     The Love Limitless
